Welcome!
I’m Sarah, a writer, teacher, & passionate book-lover.

I am an Associate Professor of English and the Director of the English Master’s program at Truman State University in Kirksville, MO, where I live, teach, & write.

Writing
I pursue my love of writing while helping other writers flourish.
The writing journey is meant to be shared. So, I:
- Exchange work with incredible critique partners.
- Improve my craft through webinars and conferences.
- Teach and mentor students.
Teaching
Great literature transforms lives and is meant to be shared.
Books enthrall us, engage our emotions, expand our empathy, and alter our beliefs. As a professor, I introduce my students to a range of genres, forms, and cultural and historical contexts and help them gain insight into how we, as readers, mentally construct and understand fictional worlds. My students become both mindful and critical readers of texts, ready to enter into the conversation of how narratives reflect, challenge, and influence the world we live in.

Scholarship
Through my conference presentations and publications, I contribute depth and nuance to our understanding of important texts and films.
My research focuses on:
- Child Studies and Children’s Literature
- Russian and Eastern European Literature and Film
- South Asian Literature and Film
- Literary adaptation
- New Fabulism
- Fake (or “Hermit Crab”) Lit
Life
Cross-stitching, puzzles and miniatures bring me joy daily
Since so much of my day is spent sitting in front of the computer, I love doing things with my hands that don’t involve typing. Check out my hobbies using the links below.

Books That Make Me Happy
These books never fail to make me happy. I hope they bring you joy, too!
